About the Opportunity

Currently, Nisga’a Lisims Government has an exciting new position for a Director of Lands and Resources to join the group in Gitlaxt'aamiks (also known as New Aiyansh) in beautiful British Columbia.

Under the direction of the Chief Executive Officer, you will oversee, manage, and be responsible for the establishment, development, and operation of the Lands and Resources Directorate of Nisga’a Lisims Government (NLG) according to the Nisga’a Final Agreement (Treaty), the Constitution of the Nisga’a Nation, and the applicable Nisga’a Legislation.  

More specifically, on regular basis you will have the following responsibilities:

  • Implementing, administering and ensuring compliance with the Nisga’a Final Agreement, the Constitution of Nisga’a Nation, and other applicable legislation in respect of the lands and resources of the Nisga’a Nation to ensure that the rights and interests of the Nisga’a Nation are protected and preserved (this responsibility excludes the fish and wildlife resource and described in the Treaty)
  • Overseeing the administration and management of the natural resources of the Nisga’a Nation including those natural and physical resources as outlined in Chapter 3,4,5,6 & 7 of the Nisga’a Final Agreement
  • Overseeing the development and management of the NLG lands department including the land registry system, Nisga’a Lands in accordance with Nisga’a Legislation, and land use planning on lands belonging to the Nisga’a Nation
  • Overseeing the development, management, and administration of the NLG forest resources department, in accordance with Nisga’a Legislation
  • Actively participating, through presentation of reports and responses to inquiries, in monthly Executive meeting, and where required, attending on Wilp Si’ayuukhl Nisga’a meetings
  • Dealing with outside governments and other organizations to ensure that the rights and interests of the Nisga’a Nation are protected and preserved
  • Liaising with the Nisga’a Village Governments and other Nisga’a Institutions
  • Other related duties as may be assigned 

We invite you to apply if you have 7-10 years of experience with a multi-resource agency or in a mid to senior government role. Our ideal candidate will also have previous land management experience and a strong understanding of land tenure systems and contracts.

Candidates with a Bachelor's Degree in Resource Management or a related discipline will be highly regarded (but is not required).

You will also possess:

  • The ability to present in front of large groups
  • Previous experience with writing reports
  • Previous project management experience (asset)
  • An understanding of legal language and the legal requirements included in land tenure systems and contracts
  • Previous experience managing budgets and with managing a team

Along with the ability work well under pressure, you will be an excellent communicator, both in written and verbal situations. You will also have an understanding of the bigger picture and have the ability to deal with multiple stakeholders. 

Above all, it is crucial that you have strong organizational and time management skills. Lastly, you will need to be proficient with Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook as required. Please note that some travel to Vancouver, and throughout BC will be required
