Council of Elders hosts Simgigat Gathering

The Council of Elders hosted a meeting with Simgigat of the Nisg̱a’a Nation on June 4, 5 & 6, 2018 at Nisg̱a’a Lisims Government in Gitlax̱t’aamiks.

The meeting - a first of its kind - had the Council of Elders discussing a wide-range of issues with chief and matriarchs from lip wilaa loom̓ (our culture, our way of life), Lip Ayuuḵhl Nisg̱a’a (traditional laws, traditional practices, customary rites and traditional edicts).  Huwilp - nda will bakwsim̓ - traditional places of origins and ang̱o’oskws.

A number of the social and cultural challenges were also discussed, including the growing number of ḵ’aats (same clan relationships, mental health and addictions challenges and seniors care. 

The Council of Elders will continue to facilitate the discussions with the simgigat and sigidimhaanaḵ’ to continue seeking guidance on the interpretation of traditional values of the Nisg̱a’a Nation.
