Gitwinksihlkw offers Future Heroes Summer Boot Camp

Members of the Nisga'a Village of Gitwinksihlkw Volunteer Fire Department have had a busy summer providing boot camps to youth of all ages from each of the Nisga'a Villages in July and August.  The crew launched the Future Heroes Summer Boot Camp initiative in hopes of inspiring youngsters to consider pursuing careers as first responders in their communities by providing engaging, practical hands on experience.

The week-long boot camps covered a wide range of topics intended to provide youth with a general understanding and hands on experience in structural firefighting; wild land firefighting; jaws of life and fire extinguisher use; emergency medical response, ending the week with tests and friendly competitions.  Upon completion of the boot camp, the young participants were presented with 'Future Heroes' t-shirts.

Gitwinksihlkw Fire Fighters Simon Calder and Drae Azak were the main instructors with support from Anthony Moore, Marven Morgan and Jr. Fire fighter Aiden Tait.

Hot lunches and snacks were prepared daily by Olivia Morgan and Lori Squires.

Youth from Gitwinksihlkw, Laxgalts’ap, Gingolx and Gitlaxt’aamiks each participated in the camps between July 14 – August 15.

The Future Heroes initiative was made possible through Nisga'a Employment Skills & Training (NEST) and the Nisga'a Village of Gitwinksihlkw Volunteer Fire Department.
