Making Modern Treaties Work - Building Today for a Better Tomorrow

Nisg̱a’a Nation representatives attended the Land Claims Agreements Coalition (LCAC) annual conference, ’Making Modern Treaties Work – Building Today for a Better Tomorrow’ in Ottawa this week.

Nisg̱a’a Youth Ambassadors Logan Angus of Ging̱olx, Patrick Guno of New Aiyansh and Helina Stephens of Lax̱g̱alts’ap were part of a group of 40 youth representing the 26 modern treaty nations from across the country that participated in the Gordon Foundation’s Treaty Negotiation & Implementation exercise on February 9 & 10th

The Lands Claims Agreements Coalition National conference which took place February 11 & 12 also placed emphasis on the importance of youth as future leaders with breakout sessions that discussed ’Teaching our Citizens About the Treaties’ and ’Involving Youth, Recruitment and Succession Planning’.

Other important topics discussed included, fiscal relations of which Secretary-Treasurer Corinne McKay was a panel presenter and Nisg̱a’a Nation General Counsel Aldridge & Rosling contributed to discussions on the implications of UNDRIP to modern treaties, dispute resolution and the collaborative fiscal policy development process.  NLG Executive members and staff also contributed to the discussions as presenters and moderators for the many breakout sessions.

Modern Treaty nations, scholars and federal, provincial and territorial representatives rounded out the registration at a record 468 delegates that participated in the two-day conference.

The Nisg̱a’a Nation is a founding member of the Coalition that was founded in 2003 and has since served as its First Nations Co-Chair along with Inuit Co-Chair Nunavut Tungavik Incorporated.  The 26 modern treaty nations that form the coalition work collaboratively to advance its mandate of having the federal government adopt a comprehensive land claims agreement implementation policy.
