Nisg̱a’a Nation Commemorates Orange Shirt Day

Hundreds of Nisg̱a’a students, staff and parents of School District #92 (Nisg̱a’a) marched from Nisg̱a’a Elementary Secondary School (N.E.S.S.) all wearing orange shirt to commemorate the Every Child Matters campaign - to the Nisg̱a’a Lisims Government grounds on Friday September 29.

The student body was warmly welcomed by the NLG Executive and staff.  Chairperson Brian Tait served as Master of Ceremonies and Chairperson for the Council of Elders, Sim’oogit Ni’isy̓uus - Willard Martin opened with a moment of silence and opening prayer, Secretary-Treasurer Corinne McKay welcomed the students to NLG and provided a history about the origin of Orange Shirt Day.

̱Representing the student body was grade 12 student Doran Stephens of Lax̱g̱alts’ap who provided heartfelt remarks on the significance of the day.  Coordinator of Language and Culture Programs, Charity Peal expressed appreciation on behalf of the District to NLG hosting the students and staff on the special day.

President Eva Clayton provided her address and highlighted her personal story as a residential school survivor.

At the conclusion of the short ceremony, the students were served hot chocolate and cookies to warm up on the brisk Fall morning.
