Nisga'a Nation participates in the Great Shakeout BC 2016

Once again, the Nisga’a Nation rocked the Great BC Shakeout Earthquake preparedness drill with enthusiastic participation by many Nisga’a organizations throughout the Nass Valley.

On Thursday October 20, 2016 at 10:20 am, many Nisga’a participated by doing the three key steps that everyone should take during an earthquake:

DROP

TAKE COVER

HOLD ON

As you can see from the photos, many of our staff at NLG dropped, took cover and held on! (for more photos, go to http://nisgaanation.zenfolio.com/p608984889)

Andrew Robinson reported that many of the staff at Laxgalts’ap Village Government participated in the drill – awesome!

At the Nisga’a Valley Health Authority, Linda Morven indicated that all staff at the NVHA participated.  Even some clients who were at the centres also participated. One of the housekeepers even pulled over on the highway to participate while enroute to work from Gingolx to Gitlaxt’aamiks! Before the drill, they had reviewed safety guidelines for driving on the highway and parked away from the power lines. The drill definitely created an awareness of earthquake safety for both staff and clients – outstanding!

Gary Patsey at NEST stated that it was safety first – NEST staff participated and thankfully everyone survived the simulation! They even practiced checking in with one another (assuming the phone lines were still operable). The earthquake drill revealed that NEST should have backup communications and raised their awareness – way to go NEST.

Our thanks to Paul Mercer for coordinating this year’s event and Marianne for her support, and to all those who participated.

If your organization has photos to share please send to marianneg@nisgaa.net so she can add to the album!

See you next year :)
