Nisga'a Lisims Government and Canada Revenue Agency announce application of GST

New Aiyansh, British Columbia, May 29, 2008..... The Nisga'aLisims Government and Canada Revenue Agency announced today that the Goods and Services Tax (GST)will apply to most of the goods and servicesyou either purchase or sell on Nisga'a lands effective June1, 2008. Under the Nisga'aFinal Agreement (NFA), the remission on transaction taxes ends for Nisga'a citizenson May31, 2008.

Effective June1, 2008,everyone who buys goods or services on the Nisga'a land will be subject to the GST. This includes Nisga'a citizens on Nisga'a lands as well as citizens in the urban locals of Prince Rupert/PortEdward, Terrace and Greater Vancouver, or residing elsewhere in Canada who purchase or lease taxable goods and services.

For businesses located on former Nisga'a reserve lands who regularly sell or lease taxable goods or services you will need to register for and collect the GST/HST from your customers if:

  • You sell taxable goodsand services in Canada, and
  • Your total taxableworldwide revenues are more than $30,000 in the last four consecutive calendarquarters, or in the current quarter.

Newregistrant businesses will need to pay GST on most supplies and equipment that you use in your business. However as a GST registrant, you would be entitled to input tax credits (ITCs) related to your commercial activities.
