River Watch - June 3

River Gauge
River levels are climbing quickly but this is expected for this time of year. Looking at the gauge we can see that river levels are fluctuating between above and below average levels and can be expected to continue rising.  As of early this morning discharge rates were at about 2400 cms and rising.

Cedar-Kiteen Gauge
The snow here is melting rapidly (accounting for the corresponding rise in river levels). The snow is about half gone now and will be virtually all melted in 1 to 2 weeks.

Shedin Gauge
This high elevation gauge shows us two things:  1)  Snow levels are high at high elevation but well below 2007 levels. 2)  It has just started to melt and is project to start melting rapidly.  It will be out of snow in about a month.

Summary
River levels will peak in the next week or so and then decline as the river becomes more reliant on high elevation snow melt.  Where will it peak?  In 2007 it peaked at about 5300 cms.  The road first went under on June 4 when water levels were around 4000 cms and stayed under water until it dropped below 4000 cms on June 9.  Water levels at this point are not likely to get as high as 5300 cms – but they may still exceed 4000.  This suggests that the water may still cross the road but that it may not be as much water across the road or for as long.
