River Watch - May 29

The cool weather has kept river levels low. The hot weather forecast for next week will cause rivers to rise. There is still a lot of snow in the mountains (it's still snowing at high elevations). If the snow melts quickly the chances there will be flooding will increase.

Being prepared is the best action you can take. There are a number of publications on this site which describe what you should do:

Other publications are available in the Emergency Preparedness section of this site.

River Levels
The solid blue line is the height of the river. It's fallen over the past few days with the cool weather. The solid red line is the current flow rate and it's also fallen to below average levels (the dashed red line). The dotted red line are maximum flow rates. If the flow rate exceeds 4,000 cubic meters a second problems are likely.

Snow Pack
The bright blue line is the maximum snow pack. The dark blue line is the snow pack this year. The purple line is the average snow pack and the red line is the minimum.

The snow pack hasn't really started to melt yet. In fact over the last
day or so there's actually been new snow in the mountains. Usually by
this time of the year about 20% of the snow pack has melted. Currently
the snow pack is more than 30% above average for this time of year.
