Road Update

Update: 5:30 pm Wednesday
The highway opened to single lane alternating traffic at approx.5:20pm. Hydro is currently on site repairing the line that was damaged as a result of of the slides. NNC will be back on site at daylight tommorrow to remove the remaining debris material to the approved dump site. We are optimistic that we will have two lane traffic restored late tommorrow.

Update: 9:28 Wednesday
Equipment for the debris removal is expected to arrive onsite between 11 and 11:30 this morning.  MoT will be first attempt to dig out a single lane for traffic before completing the cleanup.  A progress update will be provided mid to late afternoon with the hopes of being able to provide an estimate at that time for completion of the single land and total cleanup…

Update: Wednesday 6:28 am
Road open Gitwinksiklkw to Laxgaltsa'ap.

Update: 7:05 pm
Mudslides
The geotechnical techs gave the ok to start removing the debris from the road.  NNC will start doing this tomorrow.

Water on road
The water has since receded to about 15 cm (6 inches) at its deepest.  This road will be opening in the morning.  Depending on whether or how much the water remains on the road in the morning, MoT may open the road only to one lane alternating traffic.

Update: 4:35 pm
There have been 5 mudslides (and not snow avalanches) on the road between Gingolx and Laxgalts'ap. The largest is up to 2 meters deep and 30 meters wide. Another slide is about the same size.

Ministry of Transportation geotechnical engineers are currently determining if it is safe to begin clearing the debris. They will be back in the office around 5 pm. At the moment it's expected the road will be open no later than Thursday evening. The Ministry will know more by 6 pm this evening.

An ice jam has blocked water flows east of the Ksi Andigwaalee bridge (so called London bridge or no name creek bridge). Water levels are currently between 1 and 2 feet (down a foot from earlier). NNC will be onsite this evening to create openings to try to reduce the water height over the road.  By 8pm MoT will have a greater understanding of how NNC’s efforts went and if they were successful.

A Nechako Northcoast employee was trapped between the high water and mudslide on the highway. She was picked up by helicopter earlier today during the inspection flights and is now safe at home.
