SD92 Setting a Vision for Learning

The School District has started a visioning process whose goals are to:

  • articulate a vision for learning in the Nisga'a School District;
  • inform planning for learning;
  • enhance relationships between the schools and the communities in the Nass Valley.

To support this process the district has created a steeing committee and advisory committee. Members on the Steering Committee includes:

  • Keith Spencer, Superintendent of Education
  • Iris O'Watch, Director of Instruction
  • Elizabeth Wilson, Consultant
  • Sharlene Grandison, Executive Secretary
  • Rod Allen, Superintendent of Achievement, Ministry of Education
  • Eric McMahon, Community Dialogue on Education Interpreter
  • Victor Jim, Aboriginal Enhancements Branch, Ministry of Education
  • Dr. Lorna Williams, University of Victoria

Members of the Steering Committee spent time in the Nass Valley last week becoming familiar with the area, informally meeting with educators and families and participating in the first meeting of the Advisory Committee.

The Advisory Committee will be known as Sayt K'ilim Goot. Membership will include the following groups:

  • Board of Education
  • School District Administration
  • School Administration
  • School PAC representatives
  • Union representatives
  • Adult Learning representative
  • WWN representative
  • Village Government representatives
  • Nisga'a Lisims Government representatives
  • Nisga'a Elders Council representative
  • Student representatives
  • Superintendent of Achivement
  • Nisga'a Valley Health representative
  • Village Government Youth representatives

It's expected the Advisory Committee will facilitate meaningful communications within and between communities, the School District, Village Governments and the Nisga'a Lisims Government and that these communications will contribute to the success of the visioning process.
