Arctic outflow warning in effect for:

  • North Coast - inland including Stewart

Very strong outflow winds and severely cold wind chill values are expected or occurring.

An arctic ridge of high pressure over the BC interior will continue to produce very strong outflow winds, frigid temperatures, and wind chill values of minus 20 and below today.

Across the central coast, the cold temperatures and cold wind chills will persist through Saturday.

Frostbite and hypothermia can occur within minutes if adequate precautions are not taken when outdoors. Minimize exposed skin with hats, scarves and mittens or gloves. Ensure that shelter is provided for pets and outdoor animals. Store or anchor objects so they are not tossed by the wind causing injury or damage.

Blizzard warning in effect for:

  • North Coast - inland including Kitimat
  • North Coast - inland including Terrace

Blizzard conditions are expected to develop over Kitimat and Terrace beginning tonight. Expect strong winds and visibility frequently near zero in snow and blowing snow.

An approaching Pacific storm will spread snow to the region tonight. At the same time, the approaching system will also increase the draw of cold air out from the interior resulting in very strong outflow winds through the inlets and valleys. This combination will result in near zero visibility in blowing snow and extreme wind chill values.

Blizzard conditions will continue into Saturday. The strong outflow winds are expected to moderate Saturday afternoon for Terrace, and Saturday evening over Kitimat. However, periods of heavy snow will continue into Sunday.

Travel is expected to be extremely hazardous due to reduced visibility. Consider postponing non-essential travel until conditions improve.

Blizzard warnings are issued when widespread reduced visibilities of 400 metres or less are expected for at least 4 hours.
