NVHA Notice - Pertussis (Whooping Cough) Confirmed Case in the Nass Valley

There has been a confirmed case of PERTUSSIS, also known as 'Whooping Cough' in the Nass Valley.

Pertussis starts like a common cold with symptoms such as sneezing, runny nose, mild fever and a mild cough.

Over the next 2 weeks, the cough gets worse, leading to severe, repeated, and forceful coughing spells that often end with a whooping sound before the next breath.  The cough pf pertussis can last several months and occurs more often at night.  The cough can make a person gag or spit out mucous, and make it hard to take a breath. See a physician and notify Public Health if signs and symptoms pf pertussis develop.

Those at highest risk are infants under 1 year of age and prenatal women in their 3rd trimester.

Pertussis vaccines protect against pertussis.  The pertussis vaccines are provided as part of your child's routine immunizations.

Ensure your children's routine immunizations are up to date: 2, 4, 5, 12, 18 months old, Preschool boosters, Gr 6 & 9.
