Among other improvements being implemented under new Museum Director Darrin Martens' leadership, the Nisga'a Museum is now admission-free for Nisga'a Citizens!

Fishermen to blockade DFO office in Prince Rupert to protest irresponsible management and manipulation of science

PRINCE RUPERT, BC, JUNE 28, 2013—In a controversial decision backed by questionable science and irresponsible management, a local official of the Department of Fisheries and Oceans (DFO) has unexpectedly closed the Dungeness crab fishery on the North Coast of British Columbia, sparking protest and possible civil disobedience from local fishermen.

Nisga'a Fisheries Amended Regulation, June 26, 2013

This amended regulation revises the Nisga'a Fisheries Regulations, 2002, NLGSR 2002/11 to prohibit harvesting for an extended period prior to and following an individual sale ("IS") fishery.

Under the Nisga'a Fisheries Regulations as they currently read, no harvesting is permitted within 24 hours prior to or following an IS Fishery.

The Gwich’in People Visit the Nisga’a Nation

Gitlaxt’aamiks, June 21, 2013 – Norman Snowshoe, Vice-President of the Gwich’in Tribal Council, along with four other members of their Nation, paid a visit to the Nisga’a Nation as part of province-wide tour of modern treaty groups which included visits to the Maa-nulth and Tsawwassen First Nations.

Police probe fatal northwestern BC accident (Terrace Standard)

POLICE ARE investigating a single vehicle accident north of Terrace which has claimed one life.

The accident took place at approximately 2 am June 15 on Hwy113 at the north end of Lava Lake, approximately 80km north of Terrace.

Two males and a female were traveling north on Highway 113 when their vehicle, a Pontiac Sunbird, left the road and rolled over.

A historic B.C. fishing boat has been removed from a permanent display at the Canadian Museum of History, prompting the museum's former curator to question the decision.

The Nishga Girl is a wooden gillnetter that sailed along the northern coast near Prince Rupert from 1968 to 1990.
