BC Court of Appeal upholds constitutionality of Nisga’a Treaty

Gitlaxt’aamiks, BC, February 5, 2013 – The British Columbia Court of Appeal handed down its decision today upholding the constitutional validity of the Nisga’a Treaty.

Land Claims Leaders Call on Ottawa to “Keep the Promises”

(February 4, 2013, Ottawa) The Land Claims Agreements Coalition, whose membership includes all modern treaty organizations in Canada, today commended the “Idle No More” movement for the attention it has brought to Aboriginal issues, and announced that the Coalition will step up calls for the federal government to fully implement modern treaty agreements.

February - Distracted Driving Awareness and Enforcement Campaign

Traffic safety – reducing fatalities and serious injuries – is the number one priority of the RCMP traffic services in BC.

Preliminary statistics for 2012 indicate distracted driving was a contributing factor in:

30% of Motor Vehicle fatalities involved distracted driving
37% of Motor Vehicle serious injuries involved distracted driving

Since the implementation of legislation banning the use of handheld devices in January of 2010, police in British Columbia issued 63,348 violation tickets for use of handheld electronic devices.

Village Councillors Sworn In to Office

Following the release of the Notice of Official Results from the Nisga'a Elections Officer Friday morning, newly elected Village Councillors of Gitwinksihlkw and Gitlaxt'aamiks were sworn in to office at duly convened meetings of their respective Village Governments.

Chairperson of the Council of Elders, Sigidim-nak' Angaye'e - Shirley Morven first administered the Oath of Office to newly elected members Clyde Azak, Bruce J. Haldane and Charles Morven at the Nisga'a Village of Gitwinksihlkw Village Government Chamber on Friday morning.
