Earthquake information for Nass Valley residents

Laxgalts’ap, BC – Saturday October, 27, 2012 – a 7.7 magnitude earthquake occurred this evening off the coast of Haida Gwaii. Effects of the quake were felt in Laxgalt’sap and we have also received reports from New Aiyansh and Terrace that the quake was felt in those locations as well.
Nisga’a Lisims Government and Laxgalts’ap Village Government emergency personnel have activated their Emergency Operations Centre (EOC) at the Laxgalts’ap Village Government administration to monitor tsunami warnings from the Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre for updates.
We can confirm that residents of the Nisga’a Village of Gingolx are on tsunami alert as a result of a tsunami warning issued following the quake. Some evacuees have arrived in the Nisga’a Village of Laxgalts’ap and are registering at the Alvin A. McKay Elementary School gymnasium.
The EOC will continue monitoring reports of the tsunami warning until it ends.
Nisga’a Highway 113 is closed to traffic travelling from New Aiyansh to Laxgalts’ap, however remains open for motorists travelling from Laxgalts’ap to New Aiyansh and Terrace.
