As Long as the Sun Shines, the Grass Grows and the Rivers Flow. Treaty 5.

On March 28th, & 29th, 2023, members from the Treaty 5 sought out to explore Nisga’a Lands, visit the communities, and observe the sitting of Wilp Si’ayuukhl Nisga’a. The delegation was received by the office of the President of the Nisga’a Nation and the Honorable Members of WSN. Both parties had the opportunity to share about historic similarities, differences, challenges and goals. Madam President Eva Clayton noted:  “the Nisga’a Nation being a membership of 8500, 4 villages, and 3 urban locals, the Treaty 5, a membership of 150,000 made up of 40 Nations is very impressive, and there’s a lot of work for the Treaty 5.” Madam President assured strong confidence in the delegation.

As you may know, our visitors are well-known for their story of Treaty 5, 1875, “The Winnipeg Treaty”, well over a century long battle with a 1763 Royal Proclamation that acknowledged their aboriginal title to their land, protection from settler land claims, and still holds strong to this day being that no law has overruled.

A warm reminder of the similarities of our forefather’s century and a half long battle for reconciliation, a understanding of cultures, free citizens with Canada, full and equal participation in the social, economic, and political life of Canada. Truly an honor to have the Treaty 5 join for a meal and share stories. Much encouragement as you pursue the finalization of your treaty.

Aamhl ji ḵ'amgwiitkwshl g̱enx̱hl dim adigwil yox̱gwin! (May the road that you travel be blessed).
