Nisga'a Wildland Fire Unit Crew receives award and recognition for bravery

The 2019 Nisga’a Wildland Fire Unit Crew has now completed their first full fire season as of November 1, 2019. It has been a very exciting first season for this new initiative and the entire crew has exceeded expectations set at the beginning of the year. There is a particular event that our Directorate would like to acknowledge. On September 17, 2019, the wildland crew was dispatched to join the Search Efforts for Sam Guno. After a full work day of searching, he was located but was non-ambulatory and was carried out on a spine board as a precaution. It took 18 hours from start to finished to bring Sam home and these guys were directly involved with this. We would like to present the first Director’s Award.

The Director’s Award is given to individuals /Teams in recognition of exemplary service. Recipients of this award have demonstrated an attitude of excellence, teamwork and go “Above and Beyond” the expectations of their job/duties.

On behalf of the Director of Enforcement & Emergency Services, Walter Mckay and the Emergency Response Services Department lead by Manager, Anthony Moore, we would like to convey our congratulations to the 20 Wildland Firefighters on a successful first season and the 11 fire crew members involved with the Search and Rescue event.
