JOB SUMMARY:

Oversees day-to-day operation of the gift store and admissions with the goal of tracking and strategically growing in-house retail operations. This position works collaboratively with Nisga’a artists and artisans, relevant wholesale retailers, contractors, and other museum staff to ensure gift store merchandise is relevant to the Nisga’a Museum’s Mission, permanent and rotating exhibitions, and outreach events and is displayed in a creative manner. Hours of work and duties may vary depending on operational requirements and museum program and event schedules.

DUTIES:

  • Work with the museum team to ensure gift store merchandise is relevant to the Nisga’a Museum’s Mission, permanent and rotating exhibitions, and maximizes financial returns. Recommend new merchandise based on latest trends, supporting relationships with artists and consignees, and facilitate development of new branded product.
  • Procure, receive, and manage merchandise in store and Point-of-Sale (POS), implementing regular changes to store displays.
  • Routinely track gift store inventory and conduct a twice-annual inventory reconciliation.
  • Perform daily gift store opening and closing procedures, comply with all cash handling procedures and reporting.
  • Process payments for gift shop sales. Balance daily cash and credit card receipts. Prepare cash reports and deposits, and monthly and seasonal reports of retail operations including key retrial metrics (e.g., conversion rate, gross and net revenue, average transaction value, year over year growth, etc.)
  • Oversee training of seasonal workers in retail customer service, gift shop and cash handling procedures and reporting. With the Education and Program Coordinator schedule seasonal workers for the gift store ensuring there is adequate coverage, filling in when necessary.
  • Develop wholesale supplier relationships with relevant artists, artisans, and retailers maintaining a contact database.
  • Attend off-site promotional opportunities such as pop-up shops and outreach events on behalf of the museum.
  • Develop content for museum website, social media, and gift store related promotional materials and update social media/websites with specials, hours, and other important information as required.
  • Provide prompt information to the public through inquiries and online, and via telephone or e-mail regarding Museum exhibitions, programs and special events. Maintain current knowledge about educational programs, exhibits, special events, and other visitor related information.
  • Ensure the front of the museum and the gift store is tidy, clean and welcoming for visitors. Report maintenance and security issues.
  • Assist with Nisga’a Museum special events and programs (set down, staffing, clean up etc.) as needed.
  • Assist the Museum Director / Curator with a variety of tasks on a project basis and act as museum administrative support when needed.
  • Support and assist in “Special Projects” as assigned including the development and launch of an e-commerce marketplace.
  • Enforce rules and regulations regarding the proper use of the facility. Enforce and comply with all the Nisga’a Museum’s Emergency Response Plan procedures and complete incident/accident reports as required.

EDUCATION and EXPERIENCE:

  • High School Diploma or GED equivalent required.
  • University Degree or post-secondary coursework in Business, Marketing, Museum Studies, History, Visual Arts or a related discipline is highly desirable.
  • Minimum of 2-3 years’ experience working in a retail environment with a preference for museum store, gallery, or similar setting, preferred.

KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS/ABILITIES:

  • Strong written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Working knowledge of Profitek POS system or other POS preferred.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with internal/external contacts and to deal effectively and courteously with the public of all ages and backgrounds.
  • Ability to meet deadlines, maintain retail and administrative priorities, track inventory, and adapt to shifting priorities and timelines.
  • Demonstrated interest in and willingness to learn museum retail.
  • Excellent planning and organizational skills with attention to detail.
  • Ability to exercise initiative and make decisions in accordance with museum policies and applicable rules and regulations.
  • Proficient use of standard Microsoft Office applications and computerized database systems.
  • Knowledge of Nisga’a history and culture and ability to speak and write the Nisga’a language is an asset.
  • An outgoing and friendly, customer service focused demeanor.

The successful candidate will be required to have/complete/provide:

  1. A valid BC Drivers’ license with recent drivers’ abstract;
  2. Three recent work related references;
  3. The successful candidate will be subject to a criminal record check
