Nass Valley Power Outage Update - as at Thursday Feb 13 at 1:15 pm

DAILY EMERGENCY OPERATIONS BRIEFING
 
The Nisga'a Lisims Government Emergency Operations Centre held its daily briefing to obtain a situation report and reports on the following:
 
BC HYDRO
 
BC Hydro indicates its repair crews are on site and working round the clock to complete repairs.  They have managed to pull in an additional 5 crews for a total of 9 crews on site, and if necessary, will secure further crews.   They have booked two helicopters to bring materials to site.  However, recent snowfall has slowed down transportation of equipment.  Never the less, the crews on site are continuing to work. 
BC Hydro estimates that power could be restored on Friday Feb 14 and 18:00.
 
NISGA'A VALLEY HEALTH AUTHORITY
The Nisga'a Valley Health Authority is continuing to provide services in all four communities and they are monitoring patient needs.
 
LiSIMS RCMP DETACHMENT
They are continuing to provide policing services as usual.
 
SCHOOL DISTRICT
Schools throughout the Nass Valley remain closed due to no backup power or heating.
 
THE NISGA'A VILLAGE GOVERNMENTS
All four NVG are notified and invited to participate in the daily briefings.  The Nisga'a Village Governments of Gitlaxt'aamiks, Laxgalts'ap, and Gingolx were in attendance at the briefing and provided the following updates:
 
GITLAXT'AAMIKS
The VG has obtained generators.  The VG has taken steps to make some generators and fuel available to members of the community and have moved some members so they can take in others who do not have heat.
The Auditorium is set up and is providing meals and expect to provide breakfast lunch and dinner today.
 
LAXGALTSAP
Last night the VG acquiring fuel on a daily basis for sale to community members.
The VG is providing dinner at community centre and will be providing breakfast, lunch and dinner tomorrow
The VG has installed a generator to the Church and is opening the church kitchen so people can cook their own meals.
Crews cutting wood and delivering to elders in the community.
 
GINGOLX 
The community centre open which has a generator and are taking steps to have a warming centre available today.
The VG offices have no phone service so during this event, the VG offices can be reached through the Nursing Clinic of the NVHA at 1 800 991-5671
IMPORTANT PUBLIC REMINDERS:
 
 
DO NOT use propane in the homes
 
BE CAREFUL if using candles
 
PROTECT YOUR HOME by taking steps to winterize
 
AVOID opening your freezer to keep your items frozen if possible
 
CONSERVE THE USE YOUR GENERATOR, if you have them, for priority items such as heat, cooking or your freezer to conserve your generator and fuel
