POSITION: Fisheries Technician (Catch Monitor) – Nisga’a Fisheries and Wildlife
SALARY RANGE: Commensurate with Qualifications and Experience
SUPERVISOR: Fisheries Manager
HOURS: 35 hours per week TERM: Full Time-Permanent LOCATION: Gingolx, BC
JOB SUMMARY: The Nisga’a Fisheries Program includes yearly research and monitoring of fish stocks and habitat. This position is for a catch monitor in the community of Gingolx, and may include occasional assistance with marine assessment projects. Individual should be highly motivated and able to work independently and available to work odd hours. Requires the ability to collect and record accurate fisheries data.


Duties:

  • Assist in various natural resources management and/or research activities;
  • Monitor fish populations using a variety of equipment;
  • Conduct interviews to collect harvest information from Nisga’a fishers;
  • Collect biological data from various fish species, for length, weight, sex, and age;
  • Collect and analyze stomach contents for diet and nutrition studies and tissues for contaminants;
  • Collate and enter harvest and/or sampling information; produce summaries;
  • Cleaning and maintaining equipment
  • Operating large and small vessels and other equipment
  • Other duties as required.

    EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE
  • Grade 12 or GED equivalent required;
  • Post-Secondary education in related field an asset;
  • Previous Fisheries experience is an asset;

    SKILLS/ABILITIES:
  • Good understanding of the Fisheries Department professional staff work requirements;
  • Must have the ability to operate a boat, required;
  • Good oral communication skills and the ability to interact professionally with field crew members, office staff, and the public is required;
  • Sufficient experience with computer applications to input and manage data including MS Word, MS Excel and MS Access;
  • Ability to prioritize and manage a workload which often includes multiple competing demands;
  • Ability to lift and carry heavy loads over rugged cross-country terrain for extended periods of time in a wilderness setting.
  • Physical capability and endurance to conduct fieldwork, including the ability to carry up to 40 lbs;
  • Knowledge of the Nisga’a Treaty an asset; Ability to understand and speak or familiarity with Nisga’a language and culture an asset.

    The successful candidate will be required to have/complete/provide:
  • A valid BC Drivers’ license;
  • Three recent work related references;
  • The successful candidate may be subject to a criminal record check.
