PORTLAND CANAL MARINE TERMINALOFFICIALLY OPENS

Marking a Major Milestone for Economic Leadership

In Stewart, British Columbia — September 9, 2026, the Nisg̱a’a Nation, Tahltan Nation Development Corporation (TNDC), and Arrow Transportation Systems Inc. have officially opened the Portland Canal Marine Terminal, marking an important milestone as British Columbia’s first majority Indigenous-owned port.

One year after acquiring the terminal, the partners also announced federal funding through Pacific Economic Development Canada to support the next phase of expansion and modernization of the facility.

Located in Stewart, British Columbia, at the northern end of the Portland Canal and near the Golden Triangle, the fully permitted deep-sea terminal provides an important gateway for the movement of critical minerals, including copper and gold concentrates, to international markets.

The terminal is owned through Portland Canal Holdings Limited Partnership, a partnership between the Nisg̱a’a Nation, TNDC, and Arrow Transportation Systems. The original acquisition was supported by a $5 million grant from the Province of British Columbia through its Northwest Strategy.

Federal funding will support port modernization, wharf expansion, inland terminal development, expanded services, long-term storage, and workforce-enabling infrastructure. These investments will help strengthen the critical minerals supply chain while improving access to global markets and supporting economic growth throughout Northwest British Columbia.

Since the acquisition in 2025, the partners have worked to modernize the terminal and develop an integrated transportation and logistics network that connects the port with communities, industries, and markets across Northwest B.C. and Yukon.

The Portland Canal Marine Terminal handles approximately 300,000 tonnes of copper and gold concentrate annually and provides all-weather, ice-free marine operations with direct highway access to Northwest B.C. and Yukon.

For the Nisg̱a’a Nation, the terminal represents more than an important transportation asset. It is an example of Indigenous Nations taking a meaningful ownership role in regional infrastructure and economic development, while creating opportunities that can benefit citizens, communities, and future generations.
