Request for Expressions of Interest

The Nisga’a Lisims Government is seeking Expressions of Interest from individuals interested in
serving on the Nisga’a Museum Advisory Committee (NMAC).
The Nisga’a Museum Advisory Committee provides advice and recommendations to support the
preservation, interpretation, and promotion of Nisga’a history, culture, language, traditions, and
heritage. Committee members contribute community perspectives and expertise to assist the
Director Curator and Nisga’a Lisims Government in advancing the Museum’s mission and
objectives.

Background

The Nisga’a Museum is the designated museum of the Nisga’a Nation, a self-governing Nation
established under the Nisga’a Final Agreement.
The Museum preserves, protects, and shares Nisga’a history, culture, language, traditions, and
heritage through collections, exhibitions, educational programming, research, and community
engagement. The Museum serves Nisga’a citizens, residents of Nisga’a Lands, and visitors from
across British Columbia, Canada and around the world.


Advisory Committee Composition and Responsibilities

The Museum Advisory Committee consists of five members appointed by Nisga’a Lisims
Government
. The Committee will include one representative from Gingolx, Laxgalts’ap,
Gitwinksihlkw, and Gitlaxt’aamiks, and one at-large member. Committee members are appointed
to contribute complementary skills, expertise, or perspectives.
The Committee provides advice and recommendations to the Director Curator and Nisga’a Lisims
Government on matters relating to the Museum’s mandate, priorities, and activities.
Responsibilities of the Committee include:

  • Serving as an advocate for the Nisga’a Museum and helping to enhance public awareness of
    its role and programs;
  • Providing advice and guidance related to Museum planning, policies, and strategic
    priorities;
  • Providing advice on collections stewardship, exhibitions, educational programming, and
    community engagement initiatives;
  • Supporting the development of partnerships and other opportunities that advance the
    Museum’s objectives;
  • Offering guidance on projects that preserve, interpret, and promote Nisga’a history, culture,
    language, and heritage;
  • Collaborating with community members, organizations, and other stakeholders to promote
    a greater understanding of Nisga’a art, culture, and history within and beyond the Nation;
    and
  • Providing advice on matters referred to the Committee by the Director Curator or Nisga’a
    Lisims Government.

    The Committee serves in an advisory capacity and does not have operational, administrative, or
    decision-making authority over Museum staff, budgets, or Museum operations.

    Term and Expectations

    Committee members are appointed by Nisga’a Lisims Government for an initial term of three
    years
    .
    Members are expected to:
  • Attend approximately two committee meetings per year (in person or by teleconference);
  • Review meeting materials in advance of meetings;
  • Participate in community consultations or special meetings when requested; and
  • Contribute constructively to discussions and recommendations.

    Desired Qualifications

    The Nisga’a Lisims Government is seeking individuals with knowledge, experience, or interest in
    one or more of the following areas:
  • Nisga’a culture, language, history, and traditions;
  • Museum, archives, heritage, or cultural resource management;
  • Indigenous cultural stewardship;
  • Governance and policy development;
  • Finance and accounting;
  • Communications and public engagement;
  • Education and research;
  • Government services and administration; and
  • Experience working with Indigenous communities.

    Preference may be given to applicants who demonstrate knowledge of Nisga’a history,
    culture, language, traditions, and community priorities, while maintaining a balance of
    skills and perspectives on the Committee
    .

    Applications are welcome from both Nisga’a citizens and non-citizens. All appointees must meet
    any eligibility requirements established by applicable legislation and policy, including Section 44
    of the Societies Act.

    Submitting an Expression of Interest

    Interested individuals are invited to submit:
  • A current résumé or curriculum vitae; and
  • A cover letter outlining their interest in serving on the Committee and any relevant
    knowledge or experience.
