POSITION: Climate Action Coordinator,

HOURS: 35 hours per week TERM: Full Time – 2 year term LOCATION: New Aiyansh, BC
JOB SUMMARY: Nisga’a Lisims Government has partnered with BC Hydro to create an exciting career opportunity in our Nation. This position will be a Full-time, 2-year position, with the opportunity for renewal. The Climate Action Coordinator will be the key advocate for energy and climate action – leading policy, program and project development and implementation to advance energy conservation, energy efficiency and low carbon initiatives throughout the community. The successful candidate will have a passion for working with people to bring about positive change in the community.
DUTIES:
• Lead policy development and implementation to advance energy efficiency and low carbon initiatives, for example by supporting analysis and adoption of standards to ensure the design and construction of high-performance buildings (e.g., though adoption of BC Energy Step Code into Buildings Policy, where applicable).
• Coordinate development and/or implementation of the Community Energy and Emissions Plan across Nation departments and groups, fostering collaboration and coordination.
• Be a change agent, working with community members to encourage and support energy conservation behaviours and actions.
• Be the community’s trusted source for information about energy consumption, energy conservation and efficiency opportunities.
• Develop and execute plans to build awareness and knowledge of the benefits of conservation and energy management and share information about incentive programs support energy conservation, efficiency and low carbon solutions for residents and businesses (e.g., utility, Provincial and Federal conservation, and energy management incentive programs, etc.).
• Identify opportunities and develop business cases around energy efficiency and low carbon energy projects including all necessary analytical work and presenting findings and recommendations to internal management and/or advisory committees.
• Manage, negotiate, and coordinate projects, programs and related grants and contracts with government, utility, and other community partners.
• Assist community members and businesses in understanding and managing electricity use and costs (e.g., using online tools available from utilities).
• Participate in relevant committees and peer networks of Indigenous Community Energy Managers.
• Identify and recognize community-specific circumstances that may present barriers to community participation in energy conservation programs (e.g., internet access, state of housing stock, consumption, past participation in energy efficiency programs, concerns about bills, etc.) and develop innovative solutions to address these challenges.
• Implement and inform an annual work plan in consultation with BC Hydro and Nation and deliver quarterly reports to BC Hydro.
• Where applicable, ensure all necessary program incentive applications and invoices are submitted.
• Where applicable, oversee consultant selection processes and manage project contractors.
• Act as the first point of contact for building maintenance staff and external contractors involved in home renovation or home building activities to communicate energy efficiency objectives.
• Compile and manage information related to the community’s housing stock, home energy use and emissions (e.g., number of houses, number of occupants, housing types and sizes, age of homes, primary heating source, age of equipment/appliances, monthly energy use, etc.);
• Compile and manage information related to the community’s commercial buildings and energy use (e.g., daycares, schools, stores etc.);
• Work with BC Hydro, Village Administration and Council to understand ongoing home maintenance requirements and opportunities for home energy upgrades or/and upgrades to buildings on Nation.
• Coordinate the development and implementation of energy efficient housing policy to ensure that existing homes/buildings are maintained to optimize energy performance and comfort and new homes/buildings are built to higher standards of energy and emissions performance.
QUALIFICATIONS / EDUCATION:
• A post-secondary education in a relevant discipline (e.g., engineering, sustainability, resource management, business management, etc.);
• Relevant certifications such as Registered Professional Planner, Registered Professional Engineer, Project Management Professional, Certified Energy Manager, etc.; or willingness to obtain.
SKILLS I ABILITIES:
• A minimum of 5 years of relevant professional experience.
• Familiarity and knowledge of energy efficient technologies.
• An understanding of building energy performance, building codes and construction practices.
• A keen interest in Nation and community building.
• Strong interpersonal and communication skills and a passion for working with people.
• Experience in stakeholder and community engagement.
• Strong organizational and project management skills.
• An ability to convey complex concepts in an easy-to-understand manner to influence positive change.
• Familiarity or interest in behavioural and social change concepts.
• Experience in business case development.
• An understanding of building energy performance, building codes and construction practices.

• Driver’s abstract and valid Class 5 license required;
• Access to vehicle required;
• Regional vehicular travel may be required.
