HOURS: 35 hours per week TERM: Full-time – Permanent LOCATION: New Aiyansh, BC
JOB SUMMARY: The Custodian plays a vital role in delivering professional custodial services across all Nisga’a Lisims Government (NLG) facilities. Working within a Level of Service (LOS) framework, the Custodian ensures that all government spaces are maintained to professional standards that support healthy, safe, and welcoming environments for staff, guests, and the Nisga’a Nation.
The Custodian will demonstrate a service-oriented approach, balancing technical cleaning skills with a commitment to professionalism, teamwork, and accountability. This includes consistent application of custodial best practices, effective communication with departments, and contributing to the overall reputation of NLG as a professional and responsive organization.
DUITES:
• Deliver custodial services in accordance with established Level of Service Agreements (LOSAs) with departments, ensuring clarity of expectations and quality outcomes.
• Prepare spaces for daily use by ensuring cleanliness, orderliness, and readiness of facilities.
• Perform routine custodial tasks, including:
• Collecting and removing trash, recycling, and compost.
• Dusting and sanitizing high-touch surfaces.
• Sweeping, mopping, and vacuuming floors and carpets.
• Washing and sanitizing toilets, sinks, showers, and restocking supplies.
• Cleaning glass, mirrors, and interior/exterior windows.
• Maintain exterior premises, including entrances, walkways, snow clearing, lawn care, and plant maintenance.
• Support workplace safety and wellness by preventing infestations, responding to minor maintenance issues, and reporting hazards or facility deficiencies.
• Secure facilities after hours by locking doors, closing windows, and setting alarms.
• Adjust hours when necessary to respond to seasonal demands (e.g., snow, heavy rainfall, community events).
• Demonstrate professional communication when interacting with staff and departments, including addressing issues constructively through formal channels rather than informal notes.
• Contribute to a culture of continuous improvement by participating in training, feedback, and service evaluations.
• Perform other related duties as assigned.
EXPERIENCE / SKILLS / ABILITIES
• Building Service Worker Certificate level(s) 1 & 2 or willingness to obtain (required).
• Knowledge of and experience using custodial equipment (manual, power tools, light/heavy machinery).
• Knowledge of safe use, handling, and storage of industrial cleaning products and chemicals.
• WHMIS certification or willingness to obtain (required).
• Previous experience as a custodian, cleaner, or janitor is an asset, especially in professional office or institutional settings.
• Demonstrated attention to detail, reliability, and service-minded approach.
• Ability to follow and uphold Level of Service Agreements to ensure consistent delivery across multiple NLG facilities.
• Strong interpersonal and communication skills to work effectively with staff, contractors, and the public.
• Flexibility to work evenings Monday to Friday, with occasional weekend shifts as required.
OTHER:
• Valid Class 5 BC Driver’s License (required).
• Successful completion of a Criminal Records Check, recent work references, and a current driver’s abstract will be required of the successful candidate.
