Office of the President | Progressing from truth to action on this National Day for Truth and Reconciliation

On September 30, 2026, we join as the Nisg̱a’a Nation with communities across Canada in recognition of the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation and the Every Child Matters Orange Shirt Day campaign. The National Day for Truth and Reconciliation is an opportunity to honour memory, speak truth, and heal together. Our strength as Nisg̱a’a lies in our culture, language, and traditions, which our ancestors resiliently carried forward for us.

On this day, we pause to honour the children who never made it home, the survivors of residential schools, and the families and communities forever impacted by this painful legacy. We wear orange in solidarity, and we commit to listening, learning, and supporting healing within our communities.

This year’s theme, Sik’ihlk huk’aḵ’anim̓t wilaakwdiit n̓uum̓, represents a shift from simply learning about the history of the residential school system to translating awareness into meaningful action – addressing ongoing impacts. “Taking Truth to Action” encourages listening to the stories of survivors and understanding that truth is only the first step; the critical step is taking personal and collective responsibility to create tangible change.

Together, guided by the wisdom of our Elders, we continue the vital journey of reconciliation – today, and every day. In the spirit of Sayt-K’il̓im-G̱oot, we are stronger together.
