Red Road North Grand Opening
On Tuesday, December 2, 2025, northwest First Nations community members and members of the Northern First Nations Alliance (NFNA), celebrated the grand opening of Red Road North.
The Terrace, BC Red Road Recovery centre, developed in partnership with NFNA, marks an important milestone in BC’s history as the first detox centre in northwestern BC.
The product of a decade of hard work and dedication, the opening of Red Road North demonstrates recognition of the disproportionate impact the toxic drug crisis has on First Nations communities. “Terrace has one of the highest rates of deaths in the province due to the toxic-drug crisis, with 98.7 deaths per 100,000 in 2023. Indigenous people are almost six times more likely to die from illicit drug poisoning” (BC Gov News).
“We hope the opening of Red Road North helps reverse this heartbreaking statistic,” said Janice Angus, Acting Executive Director, Nisga’a Lisims Government. “Nisga’a is proud to see culturally appropriate withdrawal management and treatment and recovery services introduced to the northwest – supporting the needs of First Nations and people living in the area.”
Marking the initiation of this precedent-setting service, at the grand opening, Janice shared some key words on this milestone and the hope provided by the opening of Red Road North: “The centre is not only a building, it’s a promise,” she said. “A promise to learn from collaboration between the Northern First Nation Alliance (NFNA) and our partners – rooted in respect, cultural safety, and the understanding that healing begins when we start walking together.”

Charlene Webb, Kitsumkalum Health Director, acknowledged the hard work and dedication of the NFNA, encouraging grand opening attendees to “never forget that.” She continued: “The struggles that we face when it comes to addiction and the lives we’ve lost along the way – I don’t think there’s anybody in here that hasn’t been affected one way or the other – be it a service provider [or] family member. Pause and reflect on those that we’ve lost. And remember that today we’re making a difference – collectively we make a difference.”
Charlene called on her Kitsumkalum staff members Elizabeth and Barb to blanket Kris Cudmore, Business Development Founder, Red Road Recovery, and Scott Tremblett, Executive Director/CEO Founder, Red Road Recovery. “Thank you for believing in our dream,” said Charlene. “Together we can build more mountains.”
“This is long overdue,” said Scott. “But I promise you today, we will not waste another second, and we will bring healing and hope to the north. So thank you, from the bottom of our hearts.”
