Nisg̱a’a Urban Home Renovation Grant

Home Renovation Support for Nisga’a Citizens Living Off Nisg̲a’a Lands

The Nisga’a URN Home Renovation Grant Program (the “Program”) provides grant funding (“the Grant”) for eligible renovations to residential property (“the Property”) for Nisga’a citizens living in Canada, but not on Nisg̲aa Lands.

To qualify for this Grant applicants must: 

  • be a Nisga’a citizen and at least the age of majority;
  • Reside in Canada, but not on Nisg̱a’a Lands;
  • be the registered owner or mortgagor of the property;
  • use the Property as their primary residence;
  • not use the Property as a rental unit; and
  • not have previously received the prior Nisga’a Urban Housing Grant.

Grant Maximum: $25,000 per citizen (includes all URN and Urban Housing grants)
Annual Availability: Based on annual program budget

Citizens may apply more than once, up to the lifetime maximum per person and property.

Eligible Renovations:

  • Roof replacement or repair (eavestroughs, downspouts);
  • Handicap/wheelchair access upgrades;
  • Insulation, plumbing, electrical upgrades;
  • Window/door replacement;
  • Ventilation/indoor air quality improvements;
  • Porch, stairway, walkway repair;
  • Bathroom upgrades; and
  • General home repairs.

Not Funded:

  • Appliances;
  • Cosmetic-only upgrades; and
  • Renovations made solely to boost home value.

Start Deadline: Renovations must begin within six months.
Liability: Nisg̲a’a Lisims Government is not responsible for contractors, agreements, or renovation results.

Before receiving funds, approved applicants must sign a Declaration and Agreement.

Grant Forgiveness:

$5,000 per year is forgiven annually if:

  • Renovations began within 6 months,
  • Applicant remains at the Property,
  • No misuse of funds, sale, or move-out occurs.

Repayment Required If:

  • Renovations don’t begin within 6 months,
  • Funds are used incorrectly, and
  • The Property is sold or vacated before the Grant has been completely forgiven.

All applications will be reviewed by the Capital Administrator and a recommendation made to the Director of Capital, Housing & Facility Operations (CHFO).

Applications are reviewed based on:

  • Household income,
  • Living conditions,
  • Renovation safety and comfort impact,
  • Long-term benefit to the home,
  • Number of permanent residents,
  • Cost-effectiveness, and
  • Other criteria as determined by CHFO Director.

Applicants are encouraged to seek other funding support.
Unsuccessful applicants may reapply the following year.

The Property may be inspected by a Nisga’a appointed inspector before approval.

Applicants will receive a decision in writing once the review process is complete.
