Nisga’a Nation’s bold action related to climate and energy has been recognized through an award for its climate leadership in housing and transportation.

A panel of judges chose Nisga’a Lisims Government as one of seven communities to win Climate & Energy Action Awards announced today at the annual Union of BC Municipalities convention in Victoria.

Judges said: “Nisga’a Nation has shown extraordinary foresight and determination in addressing both climate mitigation and adaptation, while ensuring community well-being remains at the heart of their efforts. Their work spans from creating a detailed energy and emissions baseline to advancing a comprehensive Low-Carbon Transportation Plan, which improves access to safe, reliable, and affordable mobility across all four Nisga’a villages. At the same time, the Nation is leading the way in housing transformation through its Healthy Homes Energy Retrofit Pilot. These upgrades not only cut emissions and lower energy bills, but also deliver healthier, more comfortable homes that are resilient to extreme weather, wildfire smoke, and cold snaps.”

“In a remote and northern context, where climate risks are magnified and opportunities are often harder to access, the Nisga’a Nation’s leadership is both inspiring and transformative. Their example shows how Indigenous leadership, grounded in stewardship of the land, can deliver solutions that improve health, resilience, and climate outcomes for generations to come.”
