Supporting First-Time Homeownership for Nisga’a Citizens Living off Nisga’a Lands

The Nisga’a URN Housing Grant Program provides financial assistance
(the “Grant”) to Nisga’a citizens living in Canada but outside of Nisga’a Lands.
The Grant supports first-time residential property purchases, aiming to increase homeownership among urban Nisga’a citizens.
To qualify, applicants must:
- Be a Nisga’a citizen and at least the age of majority;
- Live in Canada but not on Nisga’a Lands;
- Be employed at least part-time;
- Provide proof of approved mortgage financing;
- Have never previously owned a home; and
- Have not received this or any prior Nisga’a Urban Housing Grant.
- Maximum grant: $25,000 per home.
- Annual availability: Limited based on yearly budget allocations.
- Usage: Must be for a principal residence only.
- One-time use: Grants are not available for the same home or to individuals who have already benefited from this program or the original Urban Housing Program.
The Grant is forgiven over 5 years at a rate of $5,000 per year, provided that the recipient:
- Continues to reside in the purchased home;
- Does not sell or vacate the home; and
- Maintains compliance with their mortgage or financing terms.
Note: If any condition is breached within the 5-year term, the remaining balance of the Grant must be repaid to the Nisga’a Nation.

Applications are assessed by the Capital Administrator and Capital, Housing, and Facilities Operations (CHFO) Director based on:
- Date of submission;
- Household income;
- Current living conditions;
- Number of future occupants; and
- Other relevant criteria determined by the CHFO Director.
Applicants approved for a Grant must:
- Submit an accepted, unconditional offer to purchase a property within 90 days of approval; and
- Ensure the home is located within Canada but outside Nisga’a Lands.
If this requirement is not met, approval will be revoked.
Before final approval, the home may be inspected by a representative chosen by Nisga’a Lisims Government.
All applicants will be notified in writing whether their application has been approved or denied.
