Four (4) New Courses Coming to Coast Mountain College

Today we received notice about four new courses that Coast Mountain College is looking into offering through their WorkForce Training Department.

 

They are:

  • Bridge Watchman (12 Weeks)
  • Motion Picture Set Construction Micro-credential (7 weeks)
  • Motion Picture Production Assistant Micro-credential (12 weeks)
  • Motion Picture Grip Micro-credential (7 Weeks)

I hope you’re having a good day.

 

The WorkForce Training department within Coast Mountain College is looking into offering four brand new courses! I have been asked to reach out to the community to see if there would be any interest or if you know of anyone that would be interested in any or all 4 courses. Please take a moment to read a short summary about each course listed below. If any of these seem of interest to you, please email me.

 

Course Name: Bridge Watchman (12 weeks)

 

A Bridge Watchman is part of a team involved in the following activities:

  • Keeping a lookout
  • Steering the vessel
  • Operating communication systems
  • Handling ropes and chains
  • Anchoring and mooring
  • Responding to emergencies
  • Assisting in cargo operations

 

This 12 week FULL TIME entry-level program is based on modular courses and provides the following training certificates:

  1. Workplace Hazardous Materials Information (WHMIS)
  2. Industry Canada Radio Operator’s Certificate – Maritime Commercial (ROC-MC)
  3. Marine Basic First Aid Certificate (MBFA)

 

Course Requirements:

 

  • Medical certificate from a Transport Canada-approved physician.
  • Math 11, plus two years of education in English with one of the following:
  • English 12;
  • Communications 12;
  • Three credits of post-secondary English, Humanities or Social Sciences.

 

Successful completion also grants eligibility for four month of sea time remission.

 

Course Name: Motion Picture Set Construction Micro-credential (7 weeks)

 

Learn fundamental design, planning and construction skills and start a career as a carpentry and set construction crew member.

 

Training encompasses an orientation to the film industry and workplace requirements, essentials of worksite safety, communications, key terminology, interdepartmental relations and protocols, roles and expectations, specialty tool requirements and usage, unique attributes of set construction materials and handling, and the fundamentals of set planning, design, construction, and takedown.

In an applied setting, students will construct a mock set following the key phases of film and television set construction.

 

A carpentry background is an asset, but not required, but mechanical aptitude and comfort with carpentry and tools are essential for success.

 

Course Name: Motion Picture Production Assistant Micro-credential (12 weeks)

 

Gain Motion Picture Industry essential skills that will qualify you to confidently pursue employment as a Locations Production Assistant.

 

This program will open the door to a career in film and television providing on-set skills including communication, protocols, film terminology, plus Motion Picture Industry Orientation, Motion Picture Safety and WHMIS certificates which are required to work on set.

 

This program is delivered through an ONLINE format.

 

Course Name: Motion Picture Grip Micro-credential (7 weeks)

 

Explore the vital role of film grips on set and prepare to enter the motion picture industry. 

  • Training will include an overview of how grips work to support configuring the camera and lighting equipment required to execute film or television shoots with professionalism and accuracy.
  • Instructors will also guide students through an introduction to the film and television industry, safety and workplace protocols, the application of sophisticated equipment, tools and specialized grip accessories, industry protocols and more.
  • Students with technical aptitudes who also enjoy hard work, collaboration and working in a creative field will love this program.
