In Memory of the Late Gary Fiegehen, one of many good friends of the Nisga'a Nation

Remembering a Friend….

Gary Fiegehen was not only an award-winning professional photographer he was a friend; a friend who first met the Nisg̱a’a Nation in 1987.

“Gary was a great friend to the Nisg̱a’a Nation,” says Nisg̱a’a Nation President Eva Clayton. “His calm, friendly, laidback presence became a staple when he visited us in the Nass Valley, capturing precious moments of our people, our land, our river, our sea."

Fiegehen’s award-winning photography was instrumental in the Nisg̱a’a Nation’s quest to tell their story to the world at a pivotal time when treaty making was a foreign concept in British Columbia. “The Nisg̱a’a Nation will treasure our collection of Gary’s photography spanning three decades,” says Clayton. “His love, compassion and friendship with our Nation is told through each beautiful shot he captured.”

Gary enjoyed a remarkable career focussed on illuminating the spirit and beauty of British Columbia’s people and landscapes. His photography of the Nisg̱a’a Nation is featured in Nisg̱a’a – People of the Nass River, a timeless, award-winning coffee table book that tells the history of the Nisg̱a’a Nation – most notably through Gary’s lens. Fiegehen’s photography is also featured in the annual tripartite implementation reports published by the Nisg̱a’a Nation, Canada, and British Columbia since the 2000 landmark treaty.

Gary passed on August 26, 2022. The Nisg̱a’a Nation extends heartfelt condolences to Gary’s family, friends, and colleagues.
