Extreme Heat Warning - August 10, 2022
Good day everyone.
I just completed a meeting with Ministery of Environment and climate change regarding the active heat warning in the Northwest BC. Although we are experiencing high temperatures, it does not reach the thresholds to put us in a heat warning. Thus we do not qualify for EMBC Heat warning alert task number. Below is the update from Ministry of environment. Another hot stretch is expected for the inland sections of the Central and North Coast.
Threat: Daytime high temperatures above 28 degrees Celsius combined with overnight lows near 13 degrees Celsius.
When: Central Coast: Now through Thursday night. North Coast: Now through Friday.
Location: Central Coast inland including Bella Coola. North Coast inland including Terrace and Kitimat.
Remarks: A ridge of high pressure building over B.C. will bring rising temperatures to the region through Friday. Above seasonal temperatures and elevated overnight temperatures will mean little relief from the heat.
There will be a cooling trend beginning Thursday for the Central Coast with temperatures falling back to seasonal averages. The North Coast will see the cooling trend this weekend.
Extreme heat affects everyone.
The risks are greater for young children, pregnant women, older adults, people with chronic illnesses and people working or exercising outdoors. Watch for the effects of heat illness: swelling, rash, cramps, fainting, heat exhaustion, heat stroke and the worsening of some health conditions.
To get more information:
- Check the local news for health and safety updates.
- Check HealthLinkBC online resources about heat-related illness and how to protect yourself at www.healthlinkbc.ca/healthlinkbc-files/heat-related-illness
- Call HealthLinkBC at 8-1-1 to ask about heat-related illness.
Environment Canada and local Medical Health Officers expect an increase in health and safety risks from heat and are advising the public to take precautions.
Please continue to monitor alerts and forecasts issued by Environment Canada. To report severe weather, send an email to mailto://BCstorm@ec.gc.ca or tweet reports using #BCStorm.
