Literacy Outreach Coordinator

School District No. 92 (Nisga'a) invites applications for a LITERACY OUTREACH COORDINATOR. This position is funded by way of a successful proposal to the 2010 Legacies-Now Initiative. The position will support community literacy through collaborative planning in the Nisga'a School District. The successful candidate will facilitate the District Literacy Plan and serve a link between Nass Valley community members, service agencies and groups to identify literacy needs; build and coordinate local resources; and provide information and tools to advance literacy efforts. In addition, the LOC will provide support and coordination to literacy and numeracy achievement in consultation with the teaching staff, parents and home-school Coordinators/Village Youth Enrichment Workers.

This is a two year contract position, reporting to the Director of Instruction, School District 92 (Nisga'a), however this position has potential to continue upon completion of funding from the Literacy Now Initiative.

The LOC will work a maximum of 25 hours per week and will be compensated at $25-28 per hour depending on qualifications.

 

 Base Qualifications

Relevant post-secondary degree, diploma or related experience
- OR-
Extensive successful experience (minimum 3 years) in a directly related position

 

Training Specialization:

Literacy/Community Literacy

 

 Related Experience:  

Organizing events, managing projects, building and
facilitating partnerships

 

 Other:  Outstanding organizational, verbal, written, interpersonal,
and presentation skills;
  Strong time-management and priority-setting skills
  Critical thinking and good judgement;
  High degree of self-initiative to maintain progress and
momentum; 
  Fundraising, proposal writing enthusiasm and skills
  Experience or skills working with First Nations
communities;
  Computer software competence;
  Be able to travel to four Nisga'a communities;
 

Knowledge of Nisga'a language and culture will be
considered an asset.

 

 Requirement: The successful candidate will be required to possess a valid
drivers license and transportation so to travel between
communitites within the School District and others as may
be necessary.
