Nisga'a Medicines Coordinator

Job Summary:
To coordinate the development of Nisga'a Valley Health Authorities
Traditional Nisga'a medicines program, as outlined by the Nisga'a
National Health Plan. NVHA's goal is to integrate existing health care
delivery with Nisga'a healing methods in the delivery of health care.
This will include researching Nisga'a roots, plants, food, bark both
medicinal and non-medicinal; and other healing modalities under the
direction of a committee of Elders. The successful candidate will
report to the NVHA Director of Programs.

Duties:

  • To research Nisga'a medicinal plants, foods and healing methods.
  • To work with Nisga'a communities to consult and gather information.
  • To create and work with an Elders committee.
  • Research other relevant materials in other tribes.
  • To translate the English plant names to Nisga'a.
  • To maintain all records, recordings, and documents gathered.
  • To establish a calendar recording time of year when to harvest the plants/roots/bark.
  • To maintain the permit established with Nisga'a Lisims gov't.
  • Other duties as assigned

Skills/Qualifications:

  • Grade 12 completion or equivalent.
  • Demonstrated experience working with plants, Elders, medicines or traditional Nisga'a knowledge
  • Proven ability to work with others in a healthy way
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Research knowledge.
  • Proficiency in Computers is important to the position.
  • Self-motivated, self-directed and highly organized.
  • Strong people skills, respectful and a team player.
  • Understanding the Nisga'a language will be an additional benefit.
  • Current Criminal Records Check.
  • Valid BC Driver's License.
