Aboriginal Day festivities in Gitlaxt'aamiks

"It's another beautiful day in God's Country!" proclaimed Dr. Joseph Gosnell as he entered the belated Aboriginal Day festivities in Gitlaxt'aamiks today.

The Nisga'a Village of Gitlaxt'aamiks hosted their annual celebration with a theme celebrating Nisga'a culture, "The Children of today are the Elders of tomorrow".   The days' festivities kicked off with a colourful parade lead by children with beautifully decorated bikes.  The parade started at the village government parking lot and went throughout the community, landing at the finish line where all the festivities would take place at the Gitlaxt'aamiks Recreation Centre grounds.  There were activities for children of all ages, including Chief Councillor Gerald Robinson who was the first contestant in the water dunking contest.   The smaller children had fun in several large inflatable slides and play areas.  Food and arts & crafts vendors were also available for all to enjoy.  A number of contests were held throughout the afternoon including the "moose call"; yal iss (processing soapberries by hand); ts'al fish; remote control race; fitness endurance, fear factor and a tug of war.

NLG staff were proud to participate in the parade and in all the fesitivities in yet another successful annual event for Gitlaxt'aamiks.
