Alaskan 7.5 Magnitude Earthquake Affects Nass Valley Residents

A magnitude 7.5 earthquake that occurred at approximately 1:00am on January 5, 2013 in Alaska approximately 300km north of Prince Rupert was felt strongly by Nass Valley residents. 

Emergency Management personnel at Nisga'a Lisims Government and each Nisga'a Village Government quickly responded to monitor tsunami warning alerts and coordinate evacuation of coastal communities, namely the Nisga'a Village of Gingolx.

Residents of Gingolx quickly coordinated evacuation of approximately 300 residents to higher ground above the community.

Emergency personnel monitored the tsunami warning notifications and at approximately 3:13am, the tsunami warning for 'Zone A - North Coast and Haida Gwaii' was cancelled.
