 BASIC NORTHWEST COAST ART FORMLINE DESIGNING WORKSHOP

TIME-9:00 AM-5:00 PM

FEE: Free of Charge

LUNCH: Participants will be required to bring lunch on the first four days, and lunch will be provided for day 5.

Over three hundred years ago First Nations Peoples of BC Coast developed artistic traditions that are heralded throughout the world for their imaginative and stylish qualities. The Ancestor’s Collection at the Nisga’a Museum is a treasure of Northwest Coast Aboriginal Art, proudly displaying Nisga’a Bentwood boxes, rattles, painted house front, and Nisga’a regalia (crests) are made in these traditions are highly formalized and distinctive that once the basic principles have been grasped, they can be easily identified.

The “Formline” is the primary design element one which Northwest Coast (Nisga’a) art depends. Formlines are a flowing, continuous, curvilinear lines that turn, swell and diminish in a prescribed manner.

The participant will learn the basic Northwest Coast Art Formline. This Free Northwest Coast Art Formline Workshop is essential should a participant be interested in other areas such as carving, painting, drawing, fashion design and advertising. 

The following supplies will be included for the Basic Northwest Coast Design.

  • Ruler
  • Paper
  • Erasers
  • Pencils
  • Sketch pad
  • Scissors
  • Tracing paper
  • Poster paper for templates
  • Red iron oxide paint
  • Brushes-sizes #2 and #4 round, #4 flat
  • Compass set
