Nisga’a Elementary Secondary School honours past leaders at their year-end feast

On June 19, 2019, Nisga’a Elementary Secondary School students host a feast to practice Nisga’a Cultural Protocol.  The invitation was honoured by many Nisga’a organizations, the Nisga’a Nation, and visitors from schools across BC. Some highlights of honourable mention are:

  • NESS Mass Band performs silverband music for guests.
  • NESS announces a honorary wall for past and present Nisga’a leaders beginning with late Nisga’a Tribal Council Leaders Alvin. A. McKay, Dr. Bert McKay, Hubert McMillan, and late NESS Kindergarten Teacher Sharlene Faye Morven. 
  • NESS Students practice all Nisga’a feast protocol in the Nisga’a Language bringing in a total of $8,817.00.
  • NESS Students perform cultural song, drum and dance in full ragalia. 
  • University of Victoria perfoms granted cultural song of inspiration for the feast.
  • Cultural Ceremony - Grade 8 students recieved vests and rights of passage from wilksilaks and loved ones.
  • Elders honour University of Victoria students, Nanaimo highschool students, and Kitimat highschool students for choosing the Nisga’a Nation for their year-end field trips to learn more on First Nations peoples of Canada.
  • NESS contributes $2016 for a building of a drug & alchohol treatment center.
