Nisga’a Nation well represented at Canadian Cancer Society Relay for Life

Five teams from the four Nisga'a villages served as intrepid ambassadors in a fight against a disease that in one way or another affects us all.

The Terrace branch of the Canadian Cancer Society hosted their annual Relay for Life at the Skeena Junior Secondary School track on Saturday May 2, 2009.  The Relay began at 10:00am with a celebratory ‘Survivor's Walk' where all cancer survivors united in a walk around the track to kick-off the day.  The Relay then went on for the remainder of the day with several hundred survivors, family and friends walking and enjoying the beautiful sunny day.  The Relay then concluded at 10:00pm with the ‘Luminary Walk' where participants lit up the night with candles around the perimeter of the track commemorating loved ones who are survivors of cancer and in memory of those that have lost their battle to the disease.

‘Up The Nass' with team participants from New Aiyansh, Gitwinksihlkw and Laxgalts'ap raised $2,837.00; ‘Lully's Little Lizards' of Gitwinksihlkw raised $1,753.00; the Laxgalts'ap Ramblers raised $ 855.00; the ‘We Walk the Line for Sam Angus' team of Gingolx raised $631.00 and ‘Sam's Family' also of Gingolx collected $315.00.  The five teams collectively contributed $6,391.00

It is estimated that the day took in approximately $165,000 in team donations.  More information on the Relay for Life can be found at www.cancer.ca/relay.
