Update on Activities at the Nisga'a Museum

Nisga’a Museum – March 18, 2013

Activities:

This month has been very productive for us at the Museum, there were two workshops held in the education room, the first workshop was “The Basics to First Nations Design” which was held March 4 to March 8 and the instructor was George McKay, in this workshop there were 12 participants from throughout the valley. On the last day a luncheon was held, and all students received certificates which were presented by Sigidimnak Hester Mckay.

The second workshop was a “Drum Making” workshop which was held on March 13th and 14th, the instructor was Brad Percival, in this workshop were 12 participants from throughout the valley, again the workshop were successful and the students received certificates and completed with a luncheon.

Both workshops were free of charge and were very well received. The students walked away with the knowledge of Basic Design and Drum Making, as well as stories that were told by Sigidimnak Hester McKay, George Mckay and Brad Percival.

For information on Workshops, consignments and all other activities please check out nnkn or NLG’s Facebook page.

Tours and Visitors:

The Museum received many visitors this month from the surrounding areas of Kitimat, Terrace and Prince Rupert, as well we had visitors from Ottawa and Japan.

At this time of year we tend to receive a lot of visitors who drop by on their way to Fishery Bay. On Saturday March 16, 2013 we hosted our first tour to a large group, 61 people from Northwest Community College came to visit, and this visit was organized by Tracy McKay. The tours were done in 3 groups, as well as two presentations on the Oolichan were presented by Willard Martin and Hester Mckay.

Spring Break:

This week is Spring Break for all students, and as we are all aware the Nation is hosting the 17 and Under All Native Jr. Basketball Tournament. The Museum will be open to all this week and the hours are from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 pm with the last tour going through at 4:00 p.m.

“Welcome One and All and We Wish you all the Best in the Tournament this week!”
