Wind & Rain Warnings and High Streamflow Advisory

Environment Canada and the BC River Forecast Centre have issued warnings and advisories in relation to the impending heavy wind and rainfall, that will then result in a rapid rising of the Nass River.  Read further detailed information below:

ENVIRONMENT CANADA:

Special weather statement in effect for:

  • North and Central Coast

High winds and heavy rain through Sunday.

A series of storms will take aim at the North and Central Coasts from today through Sunday night. A front will move across the region today with wet and windy conditions expected. From tonight into Friday stronger southeasterly winds and heavier rain are forecast as an intense storm develops from the remnants of hurricane oho, as it races northward towards Haida Gwaii. Rain and wind warnings are now in effect for this storm. The storm will move north of the region by Friday evening.
In the wake of this storm a strong westerly flow will bring another disturbance to the Central Coast Saturday morning with yet another storm impacting the North Coast on Sunday. Computer models are estimating rainfall accumulations in the 100 to 200 mm range for the above mentioned areas from Friday through Sunday night.

Wind warning in effect for:

  • North and Central Coast, Haida Gwaii

Strong winds that may cause damage are expected or occurring.

Strong southeasterly winds of 70 to 110 km/h will develop over Haida Gwaii, Central Coast - Coastal Sections, and North Vancouver Island overnight as the remnants of Hurricane Oho approaches the area tonight as a strong post-tropical low pressure system. Winds will ease off late Friday morning as the low moves quickly north of the region.

Damage to buildings, such as to roof shingles and windows, may occur. Loose objects may be tossed by the wind and cause injury or damage.

Wind warnings are issued when there is a significant risk of damaging winds.

RIVER FORECAST CENTRE:

The BC River Forecast Centre is issuing a High Streamflow Advisory for:

  • North Coast including areas surrounding Stewart, Nass Valley, Prince Rupert and Kitimat

A series of Pacific storms is approaching the coast of British Columbia, and is expected to bring significant rainfall over the next several days. Remnants of Hurricane Oho are expected to be entrained into a north-westerly flow and bring heavy wind and intense rainfall on Friday and into Saturday. While much of the BC coast is expected to be impacted by this event, the heaviest rain is currently forecast over the central and north coastal areas. Another low pressure system is expected to follow on Sunday into Monday, bringing additional precipitation.

A High Streamflow Advisory means that river levels are rising or expected to rise rapidly, but that no major flooding is expected.  Minor flooding in low-lying areas is possible

The River Forecast Centre will continue to monitor conditions and will provide updates as conditions warrant.
