Additional snowfall of 10 to 20 cm is expected through Tuesday morning.

A frontal system has stalled over the north coast giving heavy snowfall to parts of the inland areas. Additional snow amounts of 10 to 20 cm can be expected over Terrace and Kitimat through Tuesday morning. Snow is forecast to taper off to flurries Tuesday morning as the front moves south of the region.

Hwy 16 Closed Terrace to Kitwanga

Closed in both directions from Terrace to Kitwanga due to Police Incident. A piloted detour route is available via Hwy 37, the Nass Forest Service Road and Nisga'a Hwy 113. Eastbound openings from Nass Camp 11 km east of New Aiyansh at 8 am, 12 noon and 4 pm. Westbound openings from the intersection of Hwy 37 and the Nass FSR (approx 70 km north of Kitwanga) at 10 am, 2 pm and 6 pm. Updated on Mon Nov 1 at 7:41 am. (ID# 99858)

Brief Power Outages Sunday 8 am, 10 am

BC Hydro has scheduled two 10-minute planned power outages that will affect all customers in the Nass Valley on Sunday, October 24. The 10-minute outages will take place at approximately 8:00 am and 1:00 pm.

The outages are necessary to perform switching work at the Aiyansh Substation in connection with other outage work taking place at the same time in Stewart. Stewart, Hyder and Meziadin will be out from 8:00 am to 1:00 pm.

Nisga'a Highway

Hydro Lines Down 36 km north of Junction with Highway 16, in Terrace to 38 km north of Junction with Highway 16, in Terrace (2 km). The road is reduced to single lane alternating traffic. Updated on Tue Oct 12 at 4:15 am. (ID# 99281)

DANGER AT SAND LAKE!

There's a 2 foot deep 30 - 40 foot long hole in the highway at the south end of Sand Lake. The entry and exit are very steep - a car travelling at any speed would bottom out.

Signs are very poor - a "bump ahead" and a "change from pavement to gravel" with a small flag.

This is a very dangerous situation. Be extremely careful.

Open Burning Prohibition

In order to limit the risk of starting forest fires, effective beginning noon July 29, 2010 and until further notice, all open burning is prohibited within Nisga‚Äôa Lands. 

This prohibition does not apply to areas regulated by village government burning bylaws. Where village or regional bylaws are in place governing the use of open fire or smoke management, contact those authorities for more information before lighting up.

These restrictions are published under the authority of Section 57(3)(a)(i) of the Nisga’a Forest Act.

Avalanche Danger Extreme

The avalanche danger has been upgraded to EXTREME in Terrace and coastal areas on Sunday. The system expected to hit the area tonight will bring heavy snowfall and very strong winds. Rapid loading will likely overload buried persistent weak layers and result in widespread large avalanches. Backcountry travel is not recommended.
