Open Burning Prohibition

Effectve immediately, July 13, 2012, until further notice, all open burning is prohibited within Nisga'a Lands. This measure is undertaken to limit the risk of starting forest fires.

This prohibition does not apply to areas regulated by village government burning laws.

Where village or regional bylaws are in place governing the use of open fire or smoke management; contact those authorities for more information before starting a fire.

These restrictions are published under the authority of Section 57 (3)(a)(i) of the Nisga'a Forest Act.

Members of Sliammon First Nation approve treaty by vote of 318-235

In a historic vote, the Sliammon First Nation have approved a treaty that will give band members 8,300 hectares of land, self-government and $30 million.

"This vote is a milestone in the journey to a treaty that will bring many benefits to the community and see Tla'amin become a full, self-governing treaty nation," said Aboriginal Relations and Reconciliation Minister Mary Polak in a statement Wednesday. "Even though there were forces trying to determine the future of the Tla'amin people, the Tla'amin triumphed."

The Nisga'a Fisheries conducted their Tag Recovery Draws on July 5, 2012.

The three winners of $250.00 each are:

Sam Nisyok-Chinook tag#22524 from 2011
Walter Nisyok-Coho tag#30135 from 2010
Bruce Azak-Sockeye ag#55613 from 2010

The draws were conducted during the Inland Fishery (IS), on July 5, 2012 by Sim'oogit K'eexkw (Herb Morven) and Richared Alexander, at the Nisga'a Fisheries office in Gitlaxt'aamix. The method used was a random number generator that did the selection of the winners.

Visit from members of the Federal NDPÔªø

Nathan Cullen, along with two other Members of Parliament from the NDP, were in Gitlaxt’aamix last week to attend a meeting of the Executive of Nisga’a Lisims Government and to share the NDP’s concerns about the massive piece of legislation the Harper Government has been pushing through the House of Commons in Ottawa.
