Elder's Council has new addition

Sim’oogit Baxk’ap-Jacob Nyce was sworn in as a regular member for the Council of Elders at the June 20, 2012 NLG Executive meeting in Gitlaxt’aamix. During the ceremony, facilitated by Sim’oogit Luu dis doos (Harry Moore-alternate Chair of the Council of Elders), Sim’oogit Baxk’ap “thanked the community of Gitwinksihlkw for nominating him to sit with the council of elders; he further talked of the importance of maintaining the land for the generations yet to come.”

The event began with a parade lead by the Mass-Nass Band. A spokesperson from the Gitlaxt’aamix Village Government (GVG) shared:“the elders dedicated this year’s festivities to those left behind and others that may be affected by cancer."

What’s in a number?

B.C. has many roads that are named for their geographic, cultural or historical relevance, like the Yellowhead Highway which bears the nickname of blonde-haired Iroquois-Métis explorer Pierre Bostonais. But there’s only one B.C. highway that’s numbered after a historical event – that’s Highway 113.

Historic Ruling from the Nunavut Court of Justice Upholding Inuit Rights

(June 28, 2012 -- Iqaluit, Nunavut) History was made yesterday when Justice Earl Johnson of the Nunavut Court of Justice issued his ruling in favour of Nunavut Tunngavik Inc. on the failure of the Government of Canada to create a Nunavut General Monitoring Plan as required by the Nunavut Land Claims Agreement.

Nisga'a Highway 113

The water levels at the 1km section of highway 113 at W.D. McKay bridge has receded significantly in the last two days.  The road is now back to regular two lane traffic and traffic control persons are no longer required at the site.

NLG will continue monitoring river levels and will update the public of any changes that may be forecasted by the River Forecast Centre or Environment Canada.

Motorists are encouraged to check www.drivebc.ca before travelling the Nisga'a highway to get current information on the status of the road.

Drive BC - Flooding on Nisga'a Highway

Road Flooded near W.D. McKay bridge

A "Road Flooded" sign has been posted near the William David McKay bridge. This is where water has covered a section of Highway 113. Nisga'a Lisims Government is making inquiries with Nechako Northcoast and local Highway officials whom are monitoring the situation.

Currently, the road remains open to pick up trucks and larger vehicles.  Small cars will not make it through the flooded sections.  The Ministry of Transportation will have traffic control persons on site to implement single lane alternating traffic until the water recedes.

80 B.C. schools get new playground funding

The B.C. government is spending $3.3 million to repair and replace playgrounds at 80 more schools across B.C., as part of an $8 million program launched two years ago.

Under the new program the government will provide $25,000 for repairs to existing playgrounds; $50,000 for enhancing minimal equipment; and $50,000 for replacement of existing equipment, Education Minister George Abbott announced Thursday.
